Akita Kanto Festival（秋田竿燈まつり） — Akita, Akita. Next edition: Aug 3–6, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Rows of lanterns balance on a performer's shoulder, forehead or waist above a summer avenue.

Awa Odori（阿波おどり） — Tokushima, Tokushima Prefecture. Next edition: Aug 11–15, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Dance troupes fill Tokushima's streets, and the open niwaka-ren gives visitors a chance to learn the steps and join in.

Gion Matsuri（祇園祭） — Kyoto. Next edition: 17 July (Saki Matsuri procession) and 24 July (Ato Matsuri), with events across the whole month. (CONFIRMED). A thousand years old and a month long: floats hung with lanterns standing in the streets on the yoiyama evenings, then two processions that turn them, by hand, at Kyoto's downtown crossings.

Aomori Nebuta Matsuri（青森ねぶた祭） — Aomori, Aomori Prefecture. Next edition: Aug 2–7, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Enormous lit paper warriors come down the street after dark, with the dancers surging ahead of them — and the only thing standing between you and being one of those dancers is the costume.

Sapporo Snow Festival（さっぽろ雪まつり） — Sapporo, Hokkaido. Next edition: Feb 4–11, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Whole buildings carved out of snow, standing the length of Odori Park and lit until 22:00 — free to walk through, for eight days every February.

Kumano Fireworks（熊野大花火大会） — Kumano, Mie. Next edition: Aug 17, 2027 (CONFIRMED). A beach fireworks night on the Kumano coast, with a stay plan that starts before the journey.

Atami Marine Fireworks（熱海海上花火大会） — Atami, Shizuoka. Next edition: Nov 8, 2026 (CONFIRMED). Fireworks echo around Atami Bay on several dates across the year.

Lake Biwa Great Fireworks（びわ湖大花火大会） — Otsu, Shiga. Next edition: Date not announced yet (UNANNOUNCED). Lakefront fireworks in Otsu, with Kyoto as a rail-base option.

Tsuchiura Fireworks Competition（土浦全国花火競技大会） — Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture. Next edition: Nov 7, 2026 (CONFIRMED). Fireworks makers compete on the Sakura River for the Prime Minister's Prize; choose lodging with a checked return, rather than a promised room view.

Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival（弘前さくらまつり） — Hirosaki, Aomori. Next edition: Apr 16–May 5, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Cherry branches cover the castle moats, then fallen petals turn the water pink.

Soma Nomaoi（相馬野馬追） — Minamisoma and Soma, Fukushima. Next edition: May 29–31, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Armoured riders race across the grounds and compete for sacred flags carried down from the sky.

Yamaga Lantern Festival（山鹿灯籠まつり） — Yamaga, Kumamoto. Next edition: Date not announced yet (UNANNOUNCED). Yamaga's lantern craft and dance are enduring traditions, but the next public mass dance has not been announced.

Nishimonai Bon Odori（西馬音内盆踊り） — Ugo, Akita. Next edition: Aug 16–18, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Dancers in woven hats and dark hoods move around bonfires in a small Akita town.

Izumo Taisha Kamiari Festival（出雲大社神在祭） — Izumo, Shimane. Hotel check-in nights: Nov 18, Nov 21–22, 2026. At Inasa Beach the gods are welcomed ashore, then a quiet procession leads towards Izumo Taisha.

Oarai Anko Festival（大洗あんこう祭） — Oarai, Ibaraki. Next edition: Nov 14–15, 2026 (CONFIRMED). Monkfish soup, harbour stalls and Girls und Panzer fans share Oarai's autumn festival.

Gujo Odori（郡上おどり） — Gujo-Hachiman, Gifu. Hotel check-in nights: Aug 13–16, 2027. Step into a street dance where local residents and visitors keep dancing through the Obon night.

Owara Kaze no Bon（おわら風の盆） — Yatsuo, Toyama. Next edition: Sep 1–3, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Straw hats, bowed strings and dancers moving quietly through Yatsuo's sloping lantern-lit streets.

Karatsu Kunchi（唐津くんち） — Karatsu, Saga. Next edition: Nov 2–4, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Lacquered lions, dragons and helmets sweep through a castle town to the sound of pulling teams.

Goshogawara Tachineputa（五所川原立佞武多） — Goshogawara, Aomori. Next edition: Aug 4–8, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Illuminated figures rise above the rooftops as tall festival towers circle central Goshogawara.

Shinjo Matsuri（新庄まつり） — Shinjo, Yamagata. Next edition: Aug 24–26, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Neighbourhood-built floats carry scenes from history and kabuki through Shinjo, then light up for the evening.

Comiket (Comic Market)（コミックマーケット） — Ariake, Tokyo. Next edition: Dec 29–31, 2026 (CONFIRMED). Individual creators sell self-published manga, games and goods across Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake, and every adult needs a wristband or ticket.

AnimeJapan in Osaka（アニメジャパン） — Suminoe-ku, Osaka. Next edition: Mar 27–28, 2027 (CONFIRMED). AnimeJapan leaves Tokyo for Intex Osaka in 2027: two public days of exhibitor booths, stage shows and official goods on the Sakishima waterfront.

Numazu Jimoto-Ai Festival（沼津地元愛まつり） — Numazu, Shizuoka. Next edition: Mar 20–22, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Three of Aqours' nine voice actresses take the stage each day at Kira Messe Numazu, in the Shizuoka city where Love Live! Sunshine!! is set.

Fuji Rock Festival（フジロックフェスティバル） — Yuzawa, Niigata. Next edition: Date not announced yet (UNANNOUNCED). Three days of bands across a Niigata ski resort at 1,000 metres. No train runs after the last set, so at Fuji Rock your bed is the plan.

Suzuka 8 Hours（鈴鹿8耐） — Suzuka, Mie. Next edition: Jul 2–4, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Eight hours of motorcycle endurance racing at Suzuka Circuit in Mie, with a Sunday-evening finish that decides where you sleep.

6 Hours of Fuji (WEC)（富士6時間耐久レース） — Oyama, Shizuoka. Hotel check-in nights: Sep 24–25, 2027. Hypercars pass 330 km/h on Fuji Speedway's 1.5 km straight in Shizuoka; a Gotemba bed and the race-day bus make the weekend work.

Naha Marathon（NAHAマラソン） — Naha, Okinawa. Next edition: Dec 6, 2026 (CONFIRMED). A 42.195 km road race from Naha's Onoyama Park through Okinawa's southern towns to the Peace Memorial Park and back, on the first Sunday of December.

Onbashira Festival（御柱祭） — Suwa, Nagano. Next edition: Apr 1–3, Apr 8–10, May 3–5, May 12–14, 2028 (CONFIRMED). Once every six years, Suwa's parishioners haul 16 fir trunks by hand to the four shrines of Suwa Taisha, riding them down slopes as steep as 35 degrees.

Zenkoji Gokaicho（善光寺御開帳） — Nagano, Nagano. Hotel check-in nights: Apr 10, 2027. Once every six years Nagano's Zenkoji unveils the stand-in for its hidden Buddha, linked by a cord to a pillar you can touch: 4 April – 19 June 2027.

Zao Snow Monsters (Juhyo)（蔵王の樹氷） — Yamagata, Yamagata. Next edition: Dec 26–27, Dec 30–31, 2026; Jan 1–3, Jan 9–11, Jan 16–17, Jan 22–24, Jan 29–31, Feb 5–7, Feb 10–14, Feb 19–23, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Choose the night you want to see: A festival's parade, fireworks and dancing may fall on different nights. Match your stay to the programme before booking.
Check the journey back: A nearby city works as a base only if you can get back after the event. Each guide explains access and what to check before choosing a hotel farther away.
Keep a fallback room: If your first choice is full, hold a room with cancellation terms that suit your plans. Use the event's vacancy watcher to look for openings, and check both bookings' cancellation conditions before switching.
