Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix（F1日本グランプリ（鈴鹿）） — Suzuka, Mie Prefecture. Next edition: Apr 9–11, 2027 (CONFIRMED). A third of a million admissions in three days, funnelled into a small Mie city at the end of a single-track branch line — and the organiser's own advice is to avoid the station at its front gate.

Awa Odori（阿波おどり） — Tokushima, Tokushima Prefecture. Next edition: Aug 11–15, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Four nights of dancing through the streets of Tokushima — and the one big Japanese festival you can join the evening you arrive, in your own clothes, for nothing.

Gion Matsuri（祇園祭） — Kyoto. Next edition: 17 July (Saki Matsuri procession) and 24 July (Ato Matsuri), with events across the whole month. (CONFIRMED). A thousand years old and a month long: floats hung with lanterns standing in the streets on the yoiyama evenings, then two processions that turn them, by hand, at Kyoto's downtown crossings.

Aomori Nebuta Matsuri（青森ねぶた祭） — Aomori, Aomori Prefecture. Next edition: Aug 2–7, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Enormous lit paper warriors come down the street after dark, with the dancers surging ahead of them — and the only thing standing between you and being one of those dancers is the costume.

Sapporo Snow Festival（さっぽろ雪まつり） — Sapporo, Hokkaido. Next edition: Feb 4–11, 2027 (CONFIRMED). Whole buildings carved out of snow, standing the length of Odori Park and lit until 22:00 — free to walk through, for eight days every February.

Nagaoka Fireworks（長岡まつり大花火大会） — Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture. Next edition: Aug 2–3, 2027 (CONFIRMED). A firework two kilometres wide, launched in mourning over a Niigata river town — every seat is paid, every sale is a lottery, and in 2026 it was all gone by 17 June.

Tsuchiura Fireworks Competition（土浦全国花火競技大会） — Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture. Next edition: Nov 7, 2026 (CONFIRMED). Japan's fireworks makers compete for the Prime Minister's Prize on one November Saturday an hour from Tokyo — about 20,000 shells, 650,000 people, and a town whose hotel list runs to 15 names, none with a view.
