Next edition — Aug 3–6, 2027 (CONFIRMED)
Akita Kanto turns lantern-laden bamboo poles into moving shapes of rice ears. Performers balance them along Kanto Odori at night; daytime competitions let you study the technique. It suits a northern-Japan summer trip and visitors who want more than a procession. A central Akita room also lets you stay for the visitor experience after the main performance.
How the date is set — Annual summer festival with evening performances and a separate daytime skill competition. Confirm the edition's detailed programme.
How often it runs — Held annually; weather can shorten performances or change the daytime venue.
Goes first — Choose a night that fits your onward Tohoku journey. All festival evenings carry the main performance.
Act by — Hold your Akita room when you settle your northern-Japan festival route.
The night programme includes a visitor experience after the balancing performances, so an early return changes what you can see.

A sold-out listing may reopen after a cancellation or an additional room release. 空きウォッチ Aki checks Rakuten Travel for new openings, so you can act when one appears.
Watch the rooms — free, no account
The pole moves between hand, forehead, shoulder and waist. Staying at a permitted viewing point lets you follow a performer's changes in technique. A daytime competition adds the detail that is harder to see against the night sky.
Avoid planning a same-night long-distance transfer simply because Akita has a Shinkansen station. Add the walk from Kanto Odori and the station crowd to the rail journey. A local room makes the evening easier to adjust when performances change.
Watch trained balancing performers; the programme also offers a supervised visitor experience after the night performance.
Watching for free — Public street viewing is possible outside reserved seating. The daytime skill competition is another way to see the balancing work; follow its separate venue and weather notices.
How hard it actually is — Compare a station-area hotel with a room near Kanto Odori: either can be useful if the walk is manageable. For a room outside Akita, confirm the return before adding the post-performance experience to your evening. A room shown elsewhere in the prefecture is not automatically a convenient festival base.
What a night costs — Standing street viewing and a reserved viewing seat have different budgets. Compare the room's meal plan and cancellation terms as well as its nightly price.
