Next edition — Date not announced yet (UNANNOUNCED)
Kakunodate offers two spring walks in the same town: weeping cherries along preserved samurai-house streets and Somei-yoshino trees on the Hinokinai riverbank. Choose it if you want blossom scenery with buildings and a wider riverside view. Check each area's flowering separately, then choose a local room or a rail base with a confirmed evening return.
How the date is set — The city announces each spring's festival period. Bloom reports for the samurai district and riverbank are separate from that calendar.
How often it runs — An annual spring festival; flowering and individual activities depend on the season.
Goes first — Protect the overnight stay beside the blossom stage you want, especially on weekends and Golden Week holidays. The samurai district and riverbank need not peak together; there is no single guaranteed 'best night' for the whole town.
Act by — Choose a cancellable base when planning the Akita section, then adjust the day trip after reading the separate official bloom reports.
Planning advice: Semboku publishes separate reports for the weeping cherries and riverbank trees, and warns that festival activities can change with flowering.

A sold-out listing may reopen after a cancellation or an additional room release. 空きウォッチ Aki checks Rakuten Travel for new openings, so you can act when one appears.
Watch the rooms — free, no account
The samurai district gives the blossoms a dark wooden backdrop: long branches hang over fences and frame the preserved streets. At the Hinokinai riverbank the scene opens into a continuous line of flowering trees. Walk both to see why one blossom photograph cannot describe Kakunodate.
The city's separate bloom reports make a practical difference. Begin with whichever area has the stage you came to see, rather than assuming every tree follows the same calendar.
Kakunodate can be part of a lake-and-onsen trip without becoming a hurried stop between trains. Leave time to walk from the station, visit the old streets and reach the riverbank. An overnight stay in town also allows an evening walk without watching the rail clock.
A Tazawako address is not necessarily a room beside Tazawako Station. Confirm the onward transfer before choosing a remote inn for a night-blossom visit.
Walk the samurai-house street and the Hinokinai riverbank. Enter an open house only under its own visiting rules; a street festival does not make every property public. The city's festival map shows stalls, toilets and traffic restrictions.

Watching for free — The street and riverbank walks do not require a reserved viewing seat. The 2026 guidance allowed riverbank picnicking but asked visitors not to light fires directly on the ground. Follow the current restrictions and keep away from the river when water rises.
How hard it actually is — A Kakunodate room suits an early walk and an evening return to the old streets. Akita and Tazawako are workable alternatives for a daytime visit. If the room is in a lake or mountain onsen area, check the onward bus or pickup as carefully as the train to Tazawako Station.
What a night costs — Public blossom walks and paid house interiors are different choices. Compare the complete hotel plan and the cost of return rail travel before choosing a distant room.
