17 Jul ~10:30 — Saki Matsuri procession reaches Kawaramachi-Oike — the corner where the floats are turned, and the paid grandstands begin.

17 Jul ~11:20 — It reaches Shinmachi-Oike, the far end of the grandstand stretch.

24 Jul ~09:30 — Ato Matsuri procession leaves Karasuma-Oike — an hour earlier than the 17th, and it runs the opposite way along Oike-dori.

24 Jul ~09:50 — It reaches Teramachi-Oike. The whole grandstand stretch is over in about twenty minutes.

How to see itSpectator only — each float is hauled by the preservation association that owns it, and no public volunteer scheme is published, whatever several English pages imply. What you can do is climb inside some of the floats while they stand on display on the yoiyama evenings.Watching for free — Watching from the street is free, and most people do exactly that. Paid grandstands on Oike-dori cover both processions, and the upper tiers carry live commentary in English — rare at a Japanese festival, and the best argument for paying here rather than anywhere else on this page.Tickets

General seat (both processions) — Price: ¥8,000 front row, ¥6,000 from the second row back. On Oike-dori between Kawaramachi-dori and Shinmachi-dori. — On sale: Two ways to buy, and the calendar is the whole problem for anyone flying in. Advance lottery: apply 27 April 10:00 to 6 May, drawn 13 May at 18:00, tickets issued from 1 June 10:00. General sale: from 1 June at 10:00. Both are for a festival on 17 and 24 July — so the lottery shuts almost three months out. — In English: Yes — the city's English site sells these. The lottery phase is internet-only through Ticket Pia; the general sale adds Seven-Eleven machines inside Japan.

Manabi seat — commentary, Japanese only (17 July only) — Price: ¥11,500 front row, ¥9,500 behind. Muromachi-dori to Koromonotana-dori. — On sale: Same lottery and general-sale windows as the general seats. — In English: Commentary is Japanese only. If you want to understand what is passing you, this is the wrong tier — pay up one level.

Special Manabi seat — commentary in English (both processions) — Price: ¥14,500 front row, ¥12,500 behind. In front of Kyoto City Hall. — On sale: Same lottery and general-sale windows as the general seats. — In English: This is the one to want. Live guided commentary in Japanese AND English, at roughly twice a general seat. The catch: commentary comes through your own phone, and the organiser states outright that you must bring your own device, earphones and battery.

Premium seat (17 July only) — Price: ¥125,000 front row; ¥155,000 for the second and third rows (¥110,000 / ¥140,000 in the advance lottery). Yes, that ordering is correct — the back rows are the ones with shade. At the south-west corner of the Kawaramachi-Oike crossing, where the floats are turned. — On sale: Advance lottery, then general sale, on the same calendar as the other tiers. — In English: English commentary included on every premium seat.

Where to stayHow hard it actually is — Your room here is statistically more likely to be a converted townhouse than a hotel — Kyoto licenses more than four times as many guesthouses as hotels. They hold a handful of rooms each and go one or two at a time, so nothing in this city frees up in blocks.What a night costs — Kyoto restructured its accommodation tax on 1 March 2026 and the top band went from ¥1,000 to ¥10,000 per person per night. In a well-priced room that is a rounding error. In an expensive one during the festival it is a real line on the bill, so check which band your rate falls into before you book.Know before you go

The processions run through the middle of a Kyoto July morning — the hottest, most humid conditions of any event on this page. Nebuta and Awa Odori happen after dark; here you stand in direct daytime heat, and the crowd adds its own. Bad fit for: Small children, older travellers, and anyone heat-sensitive.

Kyoto's tourism is already strained, and July is its peak. Buses turn unreliable, and downtown effectively closes to traffic around the processions. Bad fit for: Anyone planning to move around Kyoto by bus on procession days.

What regulars do

In the premium grandstand, the front row is the CHEAP one. The second and third rows cost ¥155,000 against ¥125,000 at the front — ¥30,000 more to sit further back. It is not a misprint. The rows behind come with a sun parasol, a cushion, a table and a drink holder, and the front row cannot have a parasol without blocking everyone. In Kyoto in mid-July, at a procession that runs through the middle of the morning, shade is what you are buying. (How we know: Both official sales pages list 最前列 ¥125,000 and 2・3列目 ¥155,000, and the Kyoto Tourism Navi page attributes the difference to the parasol, cushion, table and drink holder.)

Buying a commentary seat? Bring the equipment. The audio does not come over speakers or a loaned receiver — it plays on your own phone, and the organiser states in writing that the device, the earphones and the battery are yours to supply. That means a working data connection on a July morning in central Kyoto, which is where a travel eSIM is at its worst. Carry a battery pack. (How we know: The official seat page states 「通信機器、イヤホン、モバイルバッテリー等はお客様ご自身でご用意ください」.)

The second procession starts an hour earlier and is over faster. On 24 July the Ato Matsuri passes Karasuma-Oike around 09:30 and reaches Teramachi-Oike by about 09:50 — twenty minutes of grandstand, against nearly an hour on the 17th. It is the smaller, quieter procession, with about half as many floats. Want the crowd-free version? This is it. Want the spectacle on your one free morning? 2027 is the year to book early even by Kyoto standards, and a calendar shows you why. Gion Matsuri's dates never move for a weekday: the processions are 17 and 24 July, full stop. In 2026 both fell on a Friday. In 2027 both fall on a Saturday — and the biggest yoiyama evening, 16 July, lands on the Friday before. A Friday-night yoiyama into a Saturday procession is the worst combination there is for rooms: it makes the festival a domestic weekend break as well as an international trip. (How we know: Arithmetic on the fixed dates published by the organiser — no forecast involved. Check it yourself: 17 July 2027 is a Saturday.)

Budget for the new lodging tax before you book, especially at the top end. Since 1 March 2026 a room at ¥100,000 or more per person per night carries ¥10,000 of city tax per person per night — ten times the old ceiling. Treat 17 and 24 July as two festivals, not a repeat. The Ato Matsuri on the 24th is substantially smaller than the Saki Matsuri on the 17th — which, for a visitor, is often an argument for the 24th rather than against it.
