Where to stayHow hard it actually is — The ring of hotels you can walk to from Tokyo Dome is small, and on a dome night the closest, best-rated rooms go first. The rest of central Tokyo is a short ride away — in the same check the Tokyo Station, Ginza and Akihabara area alone had 220 or more hotels with a room. Akihabara is a JR ride away (change there for Ueno), Ikebukuro a Marunouchi Line ride from Korakuen, Shinjuku an Oedo Line ride from Kasuga.If the town is full

Know before you go

It is Christmas week, which fills Tokyo hotels on its own: part of the squeeze near the dome comes from Christmas, and that part would be there even without the tour. Bad fit for: Anyone budgeting on ordinary December rates

The fan club is closed to anyone living abroad: FAMILY CLUB does not accept overseas addresses, and a Japan-based proxy cannot apply for you. Bad fit for: Overseas fans who do not yet hold a ticket

What regulars do

Walk to a station that isn't the nearest one. Tokyo Dome asks concert crowds to leave in stages and to head home through quieter streets and surrounding stations rather than the closest. The dome names four: JR Suidobashi, Toei Suidobashi (Mita Line), Korakuen (Marunouchi and Namboku) and Kasuga (Oedo). (How we know: Tokyo Dome's visitor guidance for events, and its access page.)

Pick a base by its line, not its distance. Ikebukuro is a straight Marunouchi ride from Korakuen, Shinjuku a straight Oedo ride from Kasuga (last weeknight train 0:10), Akihabara a straight JR ride from Suidobashi (change there for Ueno) — but the last eastbound JR local, at 0:26, only goes one stop, to Ochanomizu. If you live in the Tokyo area, you almost certainly don't need a room: every show starts at 16:00 or 17:00 and the subways run past midnight. (How we know: Start times from the official schedule; last trains from the operators' timetables.)
