Next edition — Dec 2–3, 2026 (CONFIRMED)
Chichibu's night festival combines carved floats, musicians and fireworks in a mountain town west of Tokyo. The main festival evening is the trip's focus. You can visit from the capital, but a seat near the climactic gathering does not guarantee an easy departure: viewing-area restrictions can keep spectators late, making a local bed valuable.
How the date is set — Annual early-winter shrine festival with an eve festival followed by the main festival. Read the edition's route and transport notices.
How often it runs — Held annually; individual procession, fireworks and transport details are published separately.
Goes first — Choose the main festival night for the full evening gathering. The eve offers a different visit; it should not be substituted solely because its room is cheaper.
Act by — Choose your overnight base and exit plan before buying a viewing seat.
The viewing-seat service warns that departure can be later than 23:30 and the station shortcut closes.

A sold-out listing may reopen after a cancellation or an additional room release. 空きウォッチ Aki checks Rakuten Travel for new openings, so you can act when one appears.
Watch the rooms — free, no account
The town's moving floats and their final gathering are separate viewing choices. Decide whether you want to follow the streets or remain in a reserved area. A station-side meeting place may be unreachable across the route once restrictions begin.
For a Tokyo-side return, use Seibu-Chichibu; for Kumagaya, use Chichibu Railway. Choose the relevant timetable and a realistic departure from the viewing area. Staying locally is the practical choice if you want to remain through a late finish.
Visitors watch from allowed streets or book a designated viewing seat; the final gathering area has controlled access.
Watching for free — A street view and a paid seat at the gathering area are different experiences. Follow the edition's public viewing and closure map; the city's 2026 map was still pending when checked.
How hard it actually is — A room in central Chichibu lets you wait out the procession without relying on a train connection. Check the walk from the actual accommodation, not the word Chichibu in a search result. Hanno or Kumagaya work only with a departure plan suited to their separate railway routes.
What a night costs — Budget for the room, any paid viewing seat and return rail fare. Check the room's cancellation terms before a transport announcement changes your plan.
