Next edition — Jan 15, 2027 (CONFIRMED)
Hotel check-in nights: Jan 14–15
Nozawa Onsen's Dosojin Festival is a village fire ritual held during the ski season. Treat admission as the first booking question: the 2026 rule issued entry tickets only to villagers and guests staying within the village, including overseas guests. Ask your accommodation about the next edition's eligibility before choosing a bed outside Nozawa.
How the date is set — An annual midwinter fire festival. The linked watch includes the night before as well as the festival-night check-in.
How often it runs — A village religious custom; viewing arrangements are announced separately from the annual date.
Goes first — The festival-night stay within Nozawa deserves first attention if the admission rule again depends on local lodging. The preceding night can suit an earlier arrival. A room in Iiyama or Nagano is not an equivalent booking when village guests receive the entry tickets.
Act by — Before paying for the fire-festival trip, ask a village host whether your stay qualifies and how the next edition's entry tickets will be issued.
The published 2026 rule restricted entry to village residents and overnight village guests. Check the next edition's notice; a regional hotel reservation alone is not proof of eligibility.

Watch the rooms — free, no account
Dosojin are protective folk deities associated with village boundaries and the wellbeing of children. In Nozawa the winter observance has become a fire rite organised by the village community. A visitor watches that community's practice, following its conditions of entry.
The trip can include skiing and hot-spring streets, but those activities do not determine admission to the festival grounds. Plan the festival permission separately.
For the 2026 edition, the dividing line was staying inside the village. That made accommodation part of the entry route, not merely a place to sleep after the flames. The notice included foreign overnight guests.
Check the next edition with the host before paying for inflexible travel. If your plan uses Iiyama or Nagano, make it a daytime village visit unless the updated admission notice expressly gives you another route.
Watch under the village's entry rules and follow staff directions; the fire rite is conducted by the local community. The 2026 notice included foreign overnight guests but prohibited bringing drinks, including alcohol, into the venue. Check the next notice with your host.
Watching for free — Do not assume open street access means an unrestricted view of the fire-festival grounds. The village uses entry tickets; verify eligibility and distribution before travelling.
How hard it actually is — Look inside Nozawa if attending the fire ritual is essential. Use Iiyama or Nagano for a ski-area day trip only after recognising that they did not meet the 2026 admission condition. An alert for a room still needs a conversation with the host about the relevant edition's pass.
What a night costs — Compare ski-season room packages, meal arrangements and cancellation terms. A cheaper bed outside the village can change eligibility, so it is not simply a lower-priced version of the same trip.
