Next edition — Feb 12–14, 2027 (CONFIRMED)
The Namahage Sedo Festival brings Oga's masked visiting-deity tradition to Shinzan Shrine through ritual, dance, drums and a torchlit descent. It is the public winter festival, distinct from New Year's Eve house visits. Arrange prepaid admission and the festival bus before choosing an Oga onsen stay or a return to Akita.
How the date is set — A winter festival held around February's second Saturday, with each edition confirmed by the committee.
How often it runs — An annual public festival at Shinzan Shrine, separate from village New Year's Eve customs.
Goes first — Choose the overnight stay for the evening you will attend, with particular attention to the central weekend night. Oga Onsen suits the return festival bus; an Akita room changes the plan into a bus-and-train journey.
Act by — Arrange advance admission and your evening transport when selecting a festival night, then choose accommodation on that route.
The committee requires advance admission and prepayment, and publishes special buses because no ordinary route bus serves the venue.

A sold-out listing may reopen after a cancellation or an additional room release. 空きウォッチ Aki checks Rakuten Travel for new openings, so you can act when one appears.
Watch the rooms — free, no account
In Oga's household tradition, Namahage visit homes as deities who admonish idleness and bring blessings. The Sedo Festival gives visitors a public way to encounter that tradition at Shinzan Shrine. It combines shrine ritual with staged dance and drums.
The torch-bearing descent is the scene to plan around, but watch the earlier changes of setting too. The performers and the audience move between the shrine path and the courtyard.
An onsen evening and an Akita city stay solve different problems. Oga Onsen can keep the return local, while Akita adds a train after the festival bus. Ask an inn about meals and its nearest stop before committing to the plan.
The snowy shrine road is a reason to use the dedicated transport, especially if you are unfamiliar with winter driving. Confirm admission separately; arriving at the correct bus stop does not replace the prepaid entry booking.
Attend as a spectator with advance prepaid admission. Follow the programme between the courtyard, shrine path and performance areas, keeping outside restricted zones. The New Year's Eve household visits are a separate local custom, not an activity your festival ticket buys.

Watching for free — The shrine festival uses controlled paid entry. Do not arrive expecting an unreserved free place; check the official admission page before making the journey.
How hard it actually is — Oga Onsen is a closer overnight choice if your inn fits the festival bus stops. Akita works with the special bus to Oga Station and the Oga Line connection. Confirm the current edition's entire return before choosing the cheapest room; a shrine exit is not a railway departure.
What a night costs — Budget separately for accommodation, prepaid festival admission and the special bus. An inn's meal plan may need adjustment for the evening programme.
