Next edition — Oct 9–10, 2026 (CONFIRMED)
Hotel check-in nights: Oct 10
Takayama Matsuri brings ornate wheeled floats and mechanical puppets into the old town in spring and autumn. Choose it for craftsmanship at close range and the first evening's lantern procession. Staying within walking distance lets you see the change from daylight to night without building the trip around a last train.
How the date is set — Separate spring and autumn shrine festivals; their routes and floats differ. Check the programme for the edition you are visiting.
How often it runs — Held annually in spring and autumn; rain can change or cancel outdoor events without a postponement.
Goes first — Prioritise the first evening of the edition if the lantern procession is your reason for going.
Act by — Hold a cancellable room before committing to an evening-focused trip.
The first evening has the lantern procession; a daytime visit does not substitute for it.

A sold-out listing may reopen after a cancellation or an additional room release. 空きウォッチ Aki checks Rakuten Travel for new openings, so you can act when one appears.
Watch the rooms — free, no account
The spring Sanno festival and autumn Hachiman festival belong to different shrines and neighbourhoods. Match your room and walking route to that edition, rather than treating every old-town street as a procession route.
A central room buys time for puppet performances, a rest and the evening floats. If the affordable room is farther away, choose the return journey first and accept a shorter visit. Ask your host about late check-in before selecting a meal plan.
Watch the floats and puppet performances from permitted public areas; do not touch the floats or enter the pulling teams' space.

Watching for free — Street viewing is free. The float exhibition hall is a separate paid indoor option when rain changes the outdoor programme.
How hard it actually is — Start with a room you can walk to from the old town. Compare the hotel's actual address: a Takayama-area listing may be well outside the centre. Hida-Furukawa and Gero widen the search, but a dinner-inclusive ryokan and a late procession need compatible check-in arrangements.
What a night costs — Compare room-only and dinner-inclusive plans separately. Check late arrival, meal times and the cancellation deadline before paying.
