Walk between bathhouses in Kusatsu or Kinosaki, try coastal food in Atami or Shirahama, or plan a gorge outing in Jozankei or Akiu. Compare 20 onsen towns through their sights, local dishes and one-night itineraries, with maps, bath choices and the practical journey from the station.
Wash before entering a shared bath and keep towels and long hair out of the water. Put your phone away and avoid photography in bathing and changing areas. Follow the particular facility's rules for swimwear and tattoos.
A private bath may require a reservation or work on a first-come basis, depending on the inn; an in-room bath belongs to the room. Compare fees, use rules, session length and whether the room bath uses hot-spring water. A communal-bath plan does not establish that a couple can bathe together.
Hakone-Yumoto, Atami, Gero, Echigo-Yuzawa and Kinosaki have rail gateways. Kusatsu, Nasu and Jozankei also need a bus or property transfer in the plan. Being reachable without a car does not mean an inn is walkable from the station. Check the stop, shuttle reservation and dinner deadline.
Rules depend on the facility and may differ between communal, private and in-room baths. Confirm the specific bath with the property rather than applying one rule to a whole town.
