Phoenix was first launched in 2005 as a prayer for recovery after the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake. Its approximately two-kilometre span makes it a signature work; the festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021.
The vertical signature is the shosan-shakudama: a 900-mm, roughly 300-kg shell reaching 650 metres. The organiser's 2026 explanation describes its pairing with the Niagara cascade.
