The Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks fill the Shinano riverbank every 2-3 August: two nights, 19:20 to 21:25, crowned by the Phoenix — a starmine spanning about two kilometres, launched in prayer since the 2004 earthquake. There is no free viewing and no walk-up ticket: 180,000 paid seats a night, sold by lottery.
How the date is set — Fixed: 2 and 3 August every year, whatever the weekday. The fireworks run 19:20-21:25 both nights, and light rain does not stop them (雨天決行) — only river-flooding rain or typhoon-class wind can postpone them, with the call made around 7:00 that morning.
Goes first — Both — there are only two, the dates never move, and every seat on each is sold.
Act by — Treat April 2027 as the deadline: the station-front hotels run spring lotteries for these two nights, and the seat lottery follows in May.
Hotel New Otani Nagaoka, at the station, sells 2-3 August only by lottery application — no phone bookings and no listings on any booking site for those nights; its 2026 winners were notified by 18 May, and it says 2027 details will be posted 'in April, as usual'. The seat lottery ran 25 May-8 June in 2026, and on 17 June the organiser announced a complete sell-out and cancelled the second draw.

The Phoenix has been launched every year since the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake flattened parts of this region — a starmine so long you turn your head to follow it, flown as a prayer and paid for partly by public donations.
The other signature is vertical: the 正三尺玉, a 900 mm, roughly 300 kg shell that climbs to 650 metres before it opens. Nagaoka first launched one in 1926, so 2026 was its hundredth year — marked, the local paper wrote, alongside the revived Niagara cascade off the Chosei bridge.
The seats sell out in a June lottery and the town's rooms go even earlier. What you can still get late is a cancelled room in the overflow cities along the last trains home — the chance a vacancy watch can find for you.
You watch from a paid seat secured in advance. Elementary-school age and up need a ticket; preschoolers may sit on a lap. There is nothing to buy on the day — the reserved seat is all there is.

Watching for free — None. The organiser's FAQ says it outright — 「無料席はありません」 — the riverbank viewing areas are all ticketed, there are no day-of sales (「販売は行わないです」), and 2026's second lottery was cancelled because the first sold everything.
How hard it actually is — Nagaoka's own best rooms mostly never reach the open market — the station-front hotel sells these two nights by application-only lottery, closed by mid-May. So the decision is which city you sleep in and which train gets you back to it. What does appear on booking sites is the overflow ring — Niigata city above all — and those rooms come and go.
