Next edition — Nov 14–15, 2026 (CONFIRMED)
Oarai's Anko Festival brings the seaside town's monkfish cooking together with stalls and Girls und Panzer fan events. The autumn weekend also includes a separate commerce festival, so check which day's programme you want. A local overnight stay supports an early start; Mito is the direct rail alternative, while Hitachinaka needs a different connection.
How the date is set — The organisers announce the autumn weekend each year; the commerce festival and Anko Festival have distinct daily programmes.
How often it runs — An annual autumn event in the seaside town; food and stage details are released for each edition.
Goes first — The night before the Anko programme is the useful stay for an early food or stage visit. Include the preceding event only if its separate programme interests you. A daytime visitor can also stay in Mito without turning the festival into a late-night transfer problem.
Act by — Choose the day's programme, then reserve a flexible local or Mito room before committing to an early food queue or stage visit.
Planning advice: the 2026 notice separates the commerce and Anko days and requires a numbered ticket obtained before the advertised soup serving.

A sold-out listing may reopen after a cancellation or an additional room release. 空きウォッチ Aki checks Rakuten Travel for new openings, so you can act when one appears.

Monkfish is the local winter dish, and the Anko programme puts its preparation and soup alongside harbour-town stalls. Girls und Panzer events add another reason to visit, with different stages and shopping venues.
Read the daily programme before arranging the room. The adjacent commerce festival is part of the autumn weekend, but it is not a duplicate of the Anko day.
A local inn gives you an early start and the possibility of a separate monkfish dinner. A Mito hotel gives a direct rail journey to Oarai instead. Both are useful choices for a daytime festival.
Keep the numbered food ticket, railway ticket and hotel reservation as separate steps. The organiser's queue advice can save time, but none of those bookings replaces another. If you choose Hitachinaka, check the route via Mito or arrange the road journey explicitly.
Visit as an audience member and food customer. The main programme combines monkfish preparation, stalls and fan-oriented stages; check the current notice for the day and venue of each. Do not reserve a place overnight: the organisers prohibit camping and night-time place-holding at the event grounds.
Watching for free — Walk the public festival areas under the venue rules; food and goods are separate purchases. The 2026 notice banned high-backed chairs in the stage-viewing area and excluded pets from the lawn area. Follow the current map rather than blocking a passage for a stage view.
How hard it actually is — An Oarai inn is useful if you want the town before the day's crowds arrive. Mito is a direct Oarai-Kashima Line base. A Hitachinaka hotel is not on that direct route: plan via Mito and JR Katsuta, or confirm a road transfer. Compare the station and morning journey before choosing a room.
What a night costs — Budget separately for food, purchases and the room. Anko soup at the festival and a reserved monkfish dinner at an inn are different meals with different booking conditions.
