Next edition — Jan 11, Jan 17, Jan 24, Jan 31, 2027 (CONFIRMED)
Hotel check-in nights: Jan 11, Jan 17
Shirakawa-go's winter light-up illuminates the inhabited gassho-style village after dark. Visit with advance admission and a return journey arranged together. A room nearby does not grant entry, and an ordinary daytime bus cannot bring you back after the lights. Decide whether you want the village walk or a ticket that also includes the viewpoint.
How the date is set — The tourism association publishes winter light-up evenings each year. The event-day calendar is shown separately from the linked hotel check-in nights.
How often it runs — An annual winter event with admission managed separately from normal daytime sightseeing.
Goes first — Each illumination evening needs its own lodging and transport plan. The association's village lodging is allocated through a dedicated lottery, so an ordinary search for a neighbouring hotel is a different route to the trip.
Act by — Choose an admission route first, then secure a cancellable room that matches the booked bus or authorised village stay.
The official light-up rules separate the village lodging lottery, parking reservations and bus products. Ordinary daytime access does not become evening admission.

A sold-out listing may reopen after a cancellation or an additional room release. 空きウォッチ Aki checks Rakuten Travel for new openings, so you can act when one appears.
Watch the rooms — free, no account
Walking between lit thatched houses puts the roofs close enough to see the snow layered over them. The elevated viewpoint instead turns the village into a single panorama. These are different experiences, and the ticket options reflect the difference.
A general entry booking is not a fallback viewpoint pass. Pick the scene you want before comparing products, then check the walking route included in that booking.
The village is still a place where people live. Evening visitors enter through a managed system, not by waiting out a daytime visit. A bed in Takayama is useful because the reserved event bus takes you back there.
For a village overnight stay, use the event's lodging process. For any other base, read the return destination on the tour confirmation before arranging accommodation. A distant room is useful only if the booked trip reaches it.
The light-up is reservation-only, with tickets checked at entry. There is no walk-up admission sale. A village-entry ticket and a viewpoint ticket have different access; choose the product that covers the scene you want to see.
Watching for free — Normal daytime sightseeing is an alternative if you cannot secure a light-up booking. Leave under the day's exit rules; a daytime visit or ordinary bus-parking reservation does not let you remain for the evening event.
How hard it actually is — Takayama works if your reserved light-up bus returns there. Village lodging follows the event's booking rules; confirm admission and any viewpoint access with your chosen accommodation or tour before paying.
What a night costs — Keep the admission or tour cost separate from the room budget. Check which package includes the viewpoint, and read its change and refund rules before paying.
