Watching highly-rated stays in Shirakawa-go and Takayama for the January winter light-up nights.
Watched nights: Jan 11–17. Base: Ogimachi gassho village. This event is watched on demand: tap resume on the page to start it, and the instant a highly-rated hotel frees up (a cancellation), Aki alerts you with a one-click Rakuten Travel booking link.
The Shirakawa-go winter light-up — snow-covered gassho farmhouses glowing at dusk — happens only a few nights a year and has been fully reservation-only since 2019. Just a handful of inns exist inside the village, so light-up-night stays are lottery-grade, and Takayama hotels fill fast on those evenings too.
Light-up-night rooms sell out the moment they open, but itinerary changes free up rooms until the last minute. When the village is full, Takayama — connected by the Nohi bus — is where cancellations tend to reappear.
